Providian Medical’s Expert Comment

If you’re looking for a 4D portable ultrasound, the Voluson i is the best place to start. There’s a good reason for that: It’s the best portable 4D ultrasound machine on the market. Even with the new competition on the market, the GE Voluson i continues to have the best frame rates and image quality… even the early versions of the Voluson i are still excellent 4D imaging machines. That being said, there are some up-and-coming 4D portable ultrasound machines that won’t break your pocketbook like the Voluson i. The Voluson i has held its value very well over the years due to its demand and known quality. If this doesn’t make your budget, our sales staff can give you recommendations that will fit your budget.

The Voluson i also can connect an external DVD writer and has VGA video output for an external monitor or connecting to a DVD-Recorder.

Q:Can I connect the Voluson i to an external monitor and/or DVD-Recorder?

A: Yes, however it's not an easy setup. Our specialists know the secrets to setting this up and can customize/tailor the setup to your unique needs.

Q:Does the Voluson connect to USB storage devices?

A: Yes, the Voluson i can export images to an external DVD-writer, Flash memory, or hard drive for images, backup, and patient data.

Q:Can I connect the Voluson i to my network to store my images or send them to a radiologist for review?

A: Yes, the Voluson i has full network capabilities, however, you'll need to let your Providian Medical representative know in advance that you'll need DICOM if you want to send your images to a PACS system or radiologist for review.

Q:What is CrossXBeam?

A: CrossXBeam on the GE Voluson i is also known as compound imaging. It allows the ultrasound transducer to see from multiple lines of site at different angles, as opposed to the standard line-of-site that's perpendicular to the transducer lens.

Q:What is SRI Speckle Reduction Imaging?

A: Speckle Reduction Imaging on the Voluson i portable ultrasound machine uses a special software algorithm to identify body tissue and eliminate artifact. The result provides a clearer image with reduced artifact.

Q:Seriously, is the 4D on this system any good?

A: Of course, GE will tell you it's the best out there. There are plenty of competitors, but GE has consistently stayed ahead of the pack with its high frame rates and fantastic image quality. Your budget will likely determine whether the Voluson i is the right machine for you.

Q:What transducers work with the GE Voluson i ultrasound unit?

A: The following probes are compatible with the GE Voluson i ultrasound system: GE 4C-RS, GE 12L-RS, GE e8C-RS, GE RNA5-9-RS, GE 9L-RS, GE SP10-16-RS, GE AB2-7-RS, GE RAB2-5-RS, GE RIC5-9W-RS, and the GE RSP6-16-RS.

Q:What's the difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound?

A: Very little. This is similar to asking what the difference is between a picture and a video. 3D is a single image, while 4D is a live, moving picture version of the 3D image. In 4D obstetric situations, you would be able to see the baby move, smile, yawn, stretch, etc.

Q:What is Speckle Reduction Imaging?

A: Speckle Reduction Imaging is GE's terminology for a certain type of imaging optimization. Speckle Reduction Imaging (SRI) allows the ultrasound to better define tissue and artifact, which creates a smoother, clearer image without creating a harsh, heavy contrast image. It's a common feature among most modern ultrasounds and is one of the best imaging technologies in recent history.

Step 1: Getting Started

GE Voluson i Ultrasound TrainingIn this complete GE Voluson i training series, you’ll learn all you need to know about using the GE Voluson i, 4D ultrasound basics, and more advanced 4D ultrasound technique training.

This training also translates to the GE Voluson e, and the 4D training can also translate to using the GE Voluson 730 Pro, Voluson 730 Expert and GE Voluson e8, Voluson e10Voluson e6, Voluson P8, Voluson S6, and Voluson S8 4D ultrasound machines.

You’ll need to be familiar with those machines first, but the Voluson 4D ultrasound training basics and Voluson 4D training translates to similar features on those machines.

This is one among many of our videos in our free Ultrasound Machine Hands-On Training Library. Looking to buy a GE Ultrasound Machine? Call one of our sales experts today at (877) 661-8224.

Step 2: 2D Imaging/Optimization

Part 2 of our free training series covers the basics of 2D imaging and how to use its imaging parameters to optimize your 2D images.

This is an important part of the series even if you’re only looking to do 4D ultrasound training. The training here provides a good understanding of 2D imaging and how the machine works to achieve better image quality.

Step 3: Doppler/M-Mode

Using Doppler and M-Modes with the is relatively straightforward to those who are familiar with GE ultrasound machines.

For those looking to perform 4D imaging, both PW Doppler and M-Mode allow you to acquire a fetal heartrate. PW Doppler allows you to listen to the fetal heart as well. This chapter in our training discusses how to use these modes as well as color Doppler.

Step 4: Measurements/Reports

The GE Voluson i contains a complete measurement package for OB/GYN, Vascular and a number of other applications. This chapter of the free Voluson i ultrasound training will teach you how to take measurements, create, edit, and view reports.

The reports on the Voluson i can be quite extensive, as it has pre-programmed biometry and fetal information to include on your reports.

Step 5: Exporting/SonoView

Reviewing and Exporting images from isn’t the most straightforward process. Using the SonoView II software interface on the GE Voluson portable or console machines, you’ll learn how to review images and export them to various devices, including USB Flash Drive.

Step 6: System Setup/DICOM

Customizing is one of the more common procedures for all Voluson users. Saving presets, creating custom annotations, and general system customization are important time-savers for many users of the GE Voluson.

Step 7: 4D Basics

Although this is part of the GE Voluson i training series, the concepts here apply to all 4D ultrasound machines. This free training video discusses the differences between 2D and 4D imaging.

These concepts are difficult for new and old ultrasound technicians alike. In fact, in many training situations, I’ve found experienced sonographers often have more difficulty understanding 4D. This requires them to think of how an ultrasound “sees” differently. Hopefully the concepts here can help you get started in 4D baby imaging.

Step 8: 4D with Voluson Ultrasounds

This final installment of our training introduces basic and advanced 4D imaging on the Voluson. Be sure to view Part 7 of this series if you are not familiar or need help understanding 4D ultrasound imaging.

This 4D training can also translate to using the GE Voluson 730 Pro, Voluson 730 Expert and GE Voluson e8, Voluson e10Voluson e6, Voluson P8, Voluson S6, and Voluson S8 4D ultrasound machines. You’ll need to be familiar with those machines first, but the Voluson 4D ultrasound training basics and Voluson 4D training translates to similar features on those machines.
