System Operation and Overview: Biosound MyLab 30 Training Part 1 of 6
Part 1 of the Biosound Esaote MyLab 30 training series provides an introduction to the using the MyLab 30, including its operation, controls, and screen information. The Biosound MyLab 30 ultrasound is not necessarily intuitive to use, and this is an important part of the training series.
Although you can view each video in this series individually, it helps to view them sequentially, because each video builds on what you learned in the previous part.

Transcript to Biosound MyLab 30 Training: System Introduction and Overview
Before we get started with the Biosound MyLab training, note that you may come to this screen when you boot it up. This means that you did not close the previous exam, and you need to archive it or export it.
If you do not have a USB stuck in the back, you’ll need to unclick this Export to USB spot. Otherwise you’ll get an error. It’ll tell you that there’s nothing installed. So just let it stay to local archive and click OK. And it will save it to your hard drive. Click OK, and the machine will begin going.
While that’s started, I want to note these TGCs over here. These are called Time Gain Compensation. If you are not familiar with ultrasound yet, and you’re just getting started, you want to put these in the angle that I have them here. Kind of going from left to right, just left to center at the top, and more to the right at the bottom.
This is basically just a gain control from top to bottom of the image. And when you get started, this is a good place to start it. And as you get going, you may change them or you may not. So let’s first take a look at the user interface. We have a standard QWERTY keyboard here. You have a lot of buttons down here, all referring to different things.
There are soft menus here. We’ll get to all these in just a moment. Your trackball, your set key, your imaging mode, your gain controls, other imaging modes, saving, zooming, the TGCs which we just discussed. And we’ll get through all of those as we get on with the training. We’ll start with the trackball. Trackball has standard trackball functions you’d find on a computer. When you have a pointer, you can move it around screen. You can hit the left key to set.
And here you would type in a patient name. And as you go through, you can click into different spaces and type in more. You can use the keyboard to click backspace. Set and backspace and edit the data. In a live scanning mode– I’ll just click OK and get started here.
In a live scanning mode, trackball will have a lot of different functions. And there’ll be some shortcuts up top showing you what it will do. Right now, what the trackball does is it shows us to change the focus zone, which we’ll get into a little bit later. There’s a pointer button here which will activate a pointer, which will allow you to select different things on the screen. Click pointer again to get rid of it. Action will change various functions throughout. And we’ll touch that a number of times in the training.
And this left click button here is to select things in various menus. The soft keys here change based on your context. They’re not labeled, because the labels are actually up here. There’s four buttons and six toggle switches. Each one refers to the soft key above it. And then you can click up and down on the toggle keys, or push down here. And it will do various items that we’ll explain when we get into the different imaging modes.
On these two sides you have your imaging modes. You have your B-mode, which is also known as 2D, and your M-mode, contrast. We won’t get into here. But this knob here operates as your gain control. Same over here. You have your continuous wave, pulse wave, and color flow Doppler.
And this will operate as the gain control when you’re in one of those modes. We’ll address each mode as we get further on into the training. The Freeze button is located here. Press to freeze or unfreeze. And you’ll see that these soft key menus change as to what you can do. And up here, note that when it’s frozen, you get snowflakes up on the image.
You have your left-right buttons here for dual screen imaging. So when you’re in a live mode, you’ll hit this. And it’ll give you the first screen on the left. You hit again, and it goes to right. It doesn’t matter which one you press, but as you switch, it’ll go back and forth between those imagings, from live to a frozen image.
You could see that if I just tap on the probe here, it’ll freeze and go to the next one and back and forth. For quad screen, you’ll use this soft key here to go to the next screen. Click it again. And you’ll see here that you have quad.
So you can click Quad and get four screens up. Keep pressing this button to get all four screens. And you can use left-right button to select through. So notice if I click left, it’ll go back. If I click right, it’ll go forward. Up top. And go back.
You can activate each screen here. You can freeze from there. If you want to go back to full screen, just click B-mode. It’ll take you back to the regular 2D mode. Zoom over here allows you to zoom into an image. Press Zoom for the Region of Interest box. Use the trackball to scroll to the certain area. Press Zoom again, and it’ll give you that zoomed-in image. To go back, press the Zoom again. It’ll take you back to the standard 2D imaging.
Down along the bottom here, we have your frequency, steer in depth. Frequency will change the frequency of the transducer. And you’ll see it up here, changing. You can also do that through a soft menu down here. Steer is for color in Doppler. Depth will change the depth of your image.
You also have an Adjust key up here that works in B-mode and pulsed wave Doppler, which will attempt to automatically optimize your image by pressing it once. To turn off that automatic adjustment, press it again, and it’ll go back to the standard. Power allows you to adjust up or down, higher or lower, the amount of power that is transmitted by the transducer.
Up here we have Physio, which is for use during ECG; VTR, for video recorder controller, which many will not use; Menu, which we’ll get to later, which will allow you to preset the system. Down here we have the Clip Image Store. This is for saving still images and clips. To save an image, you’ll freeze.
Hit Clip Image, and your image will come up on a clipboard up here. If you have clips enabled on your system, you could store the CINE loop in multiple ways. You can freeze and save the entire CINE loop in memory, based upon some settings that we’ll show you later, by hitting Play.
The only way you’ll save the entire clip is by pressing Play in a live view, and hit Clip Image. You’ll see that it stores up here. And when the thumbnail appears, you’ll see a film strip at the bottom left that shows that it is a clip.
Now you can change the amount that it stores by changing this CINE here. And I’ve got it set to a max of five. And it’s going to show you– if I go lower– it’s going to show you the last three seconds or four seconds or however much you want chosen in the image to store. You can also do it in a live view.
Much like you would use a video recorder, you would hit Clip Image and Alive. And it’ll continue to store for a preset amount that you set in the settings. Or I can hit it again and hit stop, and it will save however much I just stored in there. All those clip settings can be set up in the menu, when we’ll get into later, on the general presets, on how to set up that length of clip.
Also note that the longer the clip you save, the slower it will make your workflow, and the more memory it will take on your hard drive and the longer it will take to export to USB or over a network or other device. So generally you want to use the smallest amount that you’re comfortable with to save a clip. Get over here to Archive, you’ll get into the archives.
Previous patients, in Images Stored. Exam Review will allow you to see the current exam and the images and be able to review those exams, by using the trackball, clicking on it and going through the clips there to see what you have stored.
You can delete those by putting a checkmark here and clicking Delete. And we’ll get to exporting these images in a later movie. We’ll get more into this Exam Review and these other screens later in the training. Measurements and annotations are done over here.
Here you’ll use this for basic measurements. Here you use for calculations. Here you use for annotations. Mark is for the body marker for those who use it. When you go back to a live image, freeze it, and you’ll get your body marker library up there, based on the application that you’re in. Push it again to get rid of it. To turn off the machine, you’ll simply hit this Power key right here, and it will shut down. Just push it once, and it’ll shut down automatically.
There won’t be any other warnings or anything of the sort, so you don’t want to accidentally press that in the middle of an exam. So let’s move on to the screen layout. The top, we have over here, it tells you exactly what the trackball will do. Right now, it’s saying it will scroll through a CINE loop.
So we scroll back and forth, and we see the frames here. Next we have the hard drive and the USB. Compact disc, if it’s connected. USB activity. And the machine is plugged in. If you do have a battery installed, it’ll show you the charge life of the battery up there.
Now this image area changes based on what application you’re in. Over here on the left, it’s going to show me a carotid and tell me the probe. Here you have the image information based on your frequency, depth, your gain, and other parameters that you’ll use during your imaging. That way when you save an image, you’ll see what parameters and what settings you had to get that image.
In a live image, you’ll see that you have your indices over here and what your power is. One note about frequency. It says 10 megahertz right here, but if you’re in Tissue Enhancement– which we’ll see later– it will tell you two things. Frequency will either be penetration or resolution. It’s going to use a wide variety of frequencies. So it’s just telling you you’re either using penetration to go deep, or resolution for near field. Next we’ll get into the 2D imaging with the MyLab.
