Ultrasound machines help keep us healthy in a variety of ways, and now you can add one more item to the list. Doctors are increasingly using ultrasound equipment to detect the early signs of abdominal aortic aneurysms, or triple-A. Early detection and treatment is vital, because a rupture almost always results in death.
In a "Medical Minute" article posted on the website of Florida TV station WCTV, doctor Martin Beck said that all it takes is a single ultrasound scan to check the size of the aorta and if it proves to be normal size, then the risk of an aneurysm is very small. But if it is found to be abnormal, then surgery can correct the problem. Doctors suggest people over 60 consider having an ultrasound scan to check for triple-A.
