Ultrasound and Cardiac Prevention

Ultrasound is a continually developing science. As the accuracy and ease of use in ultrasound grows, and companies such as GE Healthcare offer increasingly sophisticated ultrasound machines at competitive prices, medical science is quick to take advantage of the technology. One of the latest trends is the use of ultrasound to aid in the diagnosis of cardiovascular health of patients who have suffered transient ischemic attacks (TIA). More commonly called “mini-strokes”, TIA occurs when the flow of blood to areas of the brain is interrupted for a short period of time. Though a TIA is not as incapacitating as a full blown stroke, victims are often stricken with temporary paralysis, vision problems, dizziness, and a host of other symptoms. More importantly, (TIA) can be an early indicator of cardiovascular problems. TIA victims followed for long term studies have a high incidence of death by cardiac problems. By using ultrasound machines with Doppler type ultrasonography, physicians can perform extensive examinations, predict the probability of another event, and begin preventive treatment before they happen. These examinations are done using what is known as transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) and extracranial Doppler ultrsonography, a refinement of traditional ultrasound techniques.
