Doctors now have a new weapon in the battle against lung cancer. Using ultrasound machines with Doppler technology, doctors can now perform a lung biopsy procedure that is safer, faster and more accurate than the traditional method. The procedure is done by using ultrasound equipment to track the blood flow around a tumor and pinpoint the spot to use a needle to pull tissue for examination.
"There was a patient just recently who had what we thought was wide-spread cancer and I was able to go in and biopsy one of the lymph nodes and it was positive and that saved her any other surgical procedures," Dr. Paul Harris, a pulmunologist with Saint Mary's Health Care in Grand Rapids, said in a news story posted at Wzzm13.com.
